5.6.1 Work Ethic and Accountability

The Importance of Work Ethic

  • Complete tasks to a high standard, without shortcuts, even when no one is watching.
  • Pride in your work protects the public and the environment.

Time Management, Productivity, and Accountability

  • Poor time management leads to rushed work, errors, rework, and reduced productivity.
  • If a task is taking longer than expected, notify your supervisor early.
💡
Apprentice HabitsArrive early, stage your tools and vehicle stock, use the two-minute rule, and note what was completed at the end of each day.

5.6.2 Working with Others

  • Show genuine respect to other tradespeople.
  • Coordinate your schedule to avoid conflicts.
  • Never undermine another trade's work in front of a client.

Colleagues and Other Trades

  • Understand the basics of adjacent trades and how their work affects yours.
  • Good situational awareness separates competent journeypersons from exceptional ones.

5.6.3 Professional Presentation

Communication as a Professional Tool

  • Stand upright and maintain steady eye contact.
  • Speak clearly and at a measured pace.
  • Use correct spelling and grammar in written communication.
  • Be factual and precise in work orders, emails, and notes.

🧽
Professional StandardReplace worn or soiled uniforms promptly and keep yourself presentable.

5.6.5 Conduct

Professional conduct means behaving consistently whether the supervisor is present or not. It includes respecting client property, keeping work areas clean, storing tools properly, and following company policies and safety regulations.

⚠️
Final RuleConduct that would embarrass your employer in front of a client should not occur at all.
